There is never a day that goes by where we are not constantly bombarded with decision that must be made. Most of these occurrences that require a decision have no real impact on our daily lives or our future. Decisions like do I want my coffee black or with cream today, or which silly socks should I wear to work today. Then there are decision that could potentially be life changing. How then do we decide what to do?
It goes without saying that all effort needs to be put into research and studying which decision is the best. We cannot operate on gut feelings alone. These gut feelings could have the potential to lead us to success or to failure. However, for the decisions that you need to make that have not been made evident by studying the problem, then another decision making method is necessary. In these cases, make the decision that scares you.
What is scary when it comes to decision making? Decisions are scary when the choice requires hard work, discipline, and some risk taking. Often a choice is scary when the outcome is ambivalent and there is a chance that you could fail. On the other side of choosing to do what scares you is that the reward is far better than choosing to do what is safe. Standing up for your values is also scary if they oppose popular opinion. The decision then is to go along with popular opinion while ignoring our core values, or holding true to your values without regardless of the repercussions. It is scary to go against popular opinion, but then you are not living true to yourself which leads to shame and low regard for oneself.
Sometimes, if not the majority of the time, deciding to do what scares you is the correct decision. Starting the business you’ve always dreamed about is scary, but what if you never try? Going to your first open mic night at a comedy club is scary, but it’s always been something you’ve wanted to do. Start living your life and choose to do the thing that scares you.
