Value is determined by scarcity, desirability, and necessity. Thus, we can say that something has value if it is hard to come by, it is wanted, and it is needed. Think of some things that have value. What immediately comes to mind are precious metals. They are scarce and there is only a finite amount held within the earth. Precious metals are sought after as a way to portray status or a way to make investments. They are also needed in the production of many of the tools that we use today. For example, precious metals are needed to make jewelry, batteries, microchips, automobiles, etc. The list can go on and on. What could be more valuable than precious metals? Time.
Time is scarce, desirable, and necessary. It is scarce because we are born with a finite amount of it. As we age, time is spent and we have less of it left for the future. Time is desirable. We would certainly take more of it if it was possible. In fact, many of us try to live a healthy lifestyle in the hopes that we will add more time to our lives. It is also necessary. We cease to live when we run out of time. With this being said, time is valuable and, to me, time is the most valuable thing that we have.
It is easy to dwell on the negative aspects of time, but then we would be wasting it. Things of value should not be wasted. This is especially true with time. Do not waste it. The good news is that we have control of how we spend our time and it is also within our control to determine the value we have gotten out of the time we have spent. Each hour and minute we can decide what we do. We also decide the meaning of that time spent.
Spend time wisely. When we have free time, specifically the time we have full control over, do not waste it. In this technologically advanced age we are presented with numerous ways to spend our time. What we chose to do is important. Are we choosing to spend hours scrolling through Tiktok or choosing to volunteer at a retirement home? Choosing to spend our time with something productive will most certainly bring a sense of fulfillment and purpose. So choose wisely how you spend your time.
It could be argued that not all of our time is within our full control. The necessity of having a job to produce an income comes to mind. However, we have the opportunity to pick and choose jobs or what career to pursue. When we choose how to spend our time wisely we can develop multiple skills to increase the number of careers we could choose from. Wise and poor decisions on how to spend our time have repercussions in the future. Choose wisely. Even if we were not able to choose our jobs, we can still choose how that time spent will affect us. You can find the value and purpose in the most mundane of tasks.
In a world in which we are surrounded with countless distractors. Make a conscious decision on how you want to spend your time. Time is finite and happens to be the most valuable possession in your control. Be the ruler of your time. Make every second count and find the purpose, and value in each moment. The better we spend our time the more fulfilled we will be. You are the master of time.
