Things I Want To Tell My Kids: The Individual Builds The Community

The following series of entries into my website are intended for my children. However, all are welcomed to read the things I want to share with them.

I believe that a strong community is built on strong, intelligent, and developed individuals. We are often taught the importance of self sacrifice and charity towards others, but how can one sacrifice or provide for others if they have nothing to sacrifice or nothing to be charitable with?

Take time to develop yourself. This will take experimenting in many different facets of life. How will you know who you are, what you like, and who you want to be if you do not try many various things? You have my permission, not that you need it, but you have my permission to find out who you are and try out the many experiences that life has to offer. Eventually, as you dabble in this and that, you will feel an excitement or passion in what you have discovered. When this happens, dig deeper and explore all there is to know about this new passion.

Finding yourself will take some courage. Do not hesitate to get out of your comfort zone and try new and challenging things. What you dread the most might be what you were born to do or be! I challenge you to find something each day that gets you out of your comfort zone and forces you to exercise some courage.

A fear that may stand in your way is the fear of what others think about you. Practice putting this aside. A strong individual will have naysayers and those that stand in their way, but stand up for yourself and continue doing what you think is right.

When you have a group of strong individuals who have different talents, passions, and abilities you will have a strong community. A community of people who can care for themselves / families and contribute to the community in their specialized way. You’ll have a community with strong leaders, thinkers, teachers, healers, business people, organizers etc.

So, take the time to develop and become successful in who you are. Then, with what you have and with what you have developed, contribute to the community. Have compassion for those around you by sharing your talents, whatever they may end up being.
