It’s been about a month since I heard about this, and I believe it was on the Armstrong&Getty radio talk show, but it was a discussion about Apple budgeting billions of dollars to help subsidize housing for its’ employees. This got me thinking about potential types of governments. Specifically, large corporations taking on the role of government.
Is it possible that as established corporations grow in size and employee population that they will begin to feel the need to provide more for their employees beyond pay? The example is Apple and what was in the opening paragraph of this discussion. The price of housing surrounding tech giants is so ridiculous that the average employee cannot afford to leave near their place of employment. So, Apple, in order to provide relief for their employees, is going to subsidize housing to help with housing costs. Now, with the help of their employer, Apple employees can live near where they work.
I can’t imagine that housing subsidies is the end point for Apple and what they will be offering, or providing, to their employees. I don’t think it is necessarily a bad thing either. Large businesses that make a lot of money from the hard work of their employees should feel a sense of responsibility in making sure that their employees can live comfortably. I would prefer this over the government providing everything for the citizens. Government just needs to ensure that our freedoms are protected and not infringed.
What do you think? Will more corporations start subsidizing housing for their employees, providing food, creating their own currency, and start taking on what we view as traditional governmental roles.
Take it easy!
