GOOD & EVIL
I’ve been thinking about good and evil lately. I imagine that I’ve probably been thinking about it because of current events here in the United States and around the world. While thinking about it, I’ve come up with a general overall definition of good and evil. This will be relatively short and sweet so here we go.
Let’s start with evil. When I google the definition of evil google returns, “profoundly immoral and wicked.” This definition is lacking in my opinion because it relies on morality. Two people could have different ideas of morality and any given act could be viewed differently depending on their idea of morality. This is how I have come to view evil. Evil is anything or anyone that acts against individual freedom. Test my definition out with your own scenarios and see what you think.
Now to google the definition of good, “that which is morally right; righteousness.” Again, this definition is predicated on morality and not everyone has the same morals. Now onto my definition of good. For the most part, good is the opposite of evil, and most of us can agree on that. With that said, my definition of good is anything or anyone that acts in support of individual freedom.
There you have it. Short and sweet. We can all agree that individual freedom is a fundamental cornerstone to which everything can be measured. So, my new definition of good and evil is based on the foundation of individual freedom. Something, or someone, is good if their actions promote individual freedom and evil if they do not.
