Daily Organization and Goal Setting

Daily Organization and Goal Setting

From the time you get up to the moment your eyes close and fall asleep the day is busy and hectic.  Often times, it feels like what you set out to do was not accomplished and the entire day was a wash.  When you reflect on the activities of the day, it seems like nothing productive was done and it was a complete waste of time.  Has this happened to you?  Let’s discuss one organization technique that intrigued me and I have incorporated into my life.  The organization method is called the 1-3-5 rule to goal setting.

On another blog, written by Steven Trice, he credits the Keller Williams Realty, with this organization rule (https://boomtownroi.com/blog/keller-williams-1-3-5-goal-setting/).   As always, I want to make sure that credit is given to the right person, and in this instance, the right organization.  It appears, from the attached article, that this goal setting rule brought success for Keller Williams.  Well, what is it?

The 1-3-5 goal setting rule is a tool to help organize a person’s, team, or organization’s day or goals.  For me, I have begun to use it for my personal day and for my team’s daily goals at work.  It creates a method to take all the tasks that need to be accomplished, prioritize them, and define them in order to maximize productivity.

The 1 in 1-3-5:  This represents the one thing that must get done.  In the process of organizing your day and setting your goals, what is the one thing that cannot fail.  This is the goal that is represented by the number one.  Usually, this is the task that will take most of your energy, whether it is physical or mental energy.  It will also take longer to accomplish than the other tasks that you identify.  So, when you start organizing your day, list your tasks and decide which one is NO FAIL.  You should tackle this goal first when you have the most physical and mental energy.

Next, 3 in the 1-3-5: Review the remaining tasks and decide which the next three most important tasks are.  These three tasks are not due to be completed today, but if completed today will help you, or your organization, get ahead.  You will want to work on this tasks after completing the first task.  They do not require as much mental or physical energy.  At the moment, you might not have all the information or equipment to complete them, but need to be worked on non-the-less.

The 5 in 1-3-5: With the remaining tasks, identify five that can be completed quickly and easily.   These tasks do not require any resources or energy that you do not possess.  Quick win tasks help re-energize and create a feeling of accomplishment and a positive feeling.  Knock out one of these if you find yourself at a stale-mate when working on a 1 or 3 task and need a break or quick pick me up.  The five tasks could just be saved to the end of the day or they could be put off to the next day if the goals in 1 and 3 took up the entire day.

This rule can also apply to short, medium, and long term goals.  You can take the principle of the 1-3-5 goal setting rule and apply it to all aspects of your life; from work to family.  I encourage you to give it a try and see the benefits and feeling of accomplishment it can bring you.  Thank you for your time and attention and, as always, TAKE IT EASY!
